Crayons to Classrooms Names New Executive Director (Press Release)

May 19, 2025

Crayons to Classrooms’ founder is retiring, paving the way for new leadership to carry forward the organization’s mission of supporting teachers and promoting educational equity for all students.

Dayton, Ohio, May, 2025 – Steve Rubenstein, founder and executive director of Crayons to Classrooms, is retiring after 17 years of visionary leadership at the Teacher Resource Center. Inspired by the urgent need for school supplies in local classrooms, Rubenstein launched Crayons to Classrooms in 2008 with support from community partners.

Rubenstein brought to the role a strong background in nonprofit development and business operations, having previously served as Director of Development at the national Kids In Need Foundation, and held leadership positions in retail management with Target Corporation and Macy’s.

Amy Kopp, who currently serves as Director of Development, has been named the new Executive Director of Crayons to Classrooms.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished in support of teachers and students,” said Steve Rubenstein. “As I prepare for retirement, I’m confident that under Amy Kopp’s leadership, Crayons to Classrooms will continue to thrive, and her passion and vision will keep moving the mission forward.”

Kopp joined Crayons to Classrooms in 2020 and has played a pivotal role in expanding fundraising, programs, and the organization’s overall impact.

Kopp credits Rubenstein’s strategic vision and leadership for the organization’s growth into a vital resource for thousands of Miami Valley teachers and students each year.

“Steve built something truly special—a place where educators feel supported and students are better equipped to succeed,” said Kopp. “His legacy is one of heart, forward-thinking leadership, and a deep commitment to education.”

Since entering the nonprofit sector in 2001, Kopp has held management roles at both local and national organizations, including the American Cancer Society and Dayton Children’s Hospital Foundation. A graduate of Wright State University, she brings extensive experience in income development, volunteer engagement, and strategic partnership building.

“I’m honored to step into this role and build on the incredible foundation Steve has laid,” said Kopp. “Now more than ever, students and teachers need strong support systems—and I’m eager to grow our reach and deepen our impact across the Miami Valley.”

Kopp will officially assume her duties on June 30.

“It has been an honor to work alongside such a passionate community,” said Rubenstein. “Amy is a thoughtful, mission-driven leader, and I have every confidence in her ability to guide Crayons to Classrooms into its next chapter.”
